It's queer! by Nelson Motta (O Pasquim)

"o pasquim" was a brazilian alternative weekly, known for its paradoxical and satirical nature, published between 1969 and 1991. it was recognized for its engagement with the brazilian counterculture scene of the 1960s and for its role in opposing the military regime. in 1970, the magazine published an article about john and paul (and brian) affair, written by nelson motta. here's the translation (with adicional notes) 👇

It’s queer! by Nelson Motta

Paul McCartney loved John Lennon, who loved Brian Epstein, who loved Paul McCartney. All the whole London music scene (1) knows this, and there, the famous suspicion about Paul's “death”, which originated with an American DJ, didn't catch on.

The "death" theory is well-constructed, but the true story (the one about their faggotry (2)) makes much more sense. And it's much spicier. I prove what I said (3):

Everything was going great in the John-Paul-Epstein triangle. Everyone loved each other, they adored jelly beans, everything was rosy, smoke and mirrors, etc. Ringo and George Harrison were always on a different page. The duo was Lennon and McCartney — they sang together, composed together, did everything together. Together with Brian Epstein, of course, who was openly queer and quite relaxed about it.

Everything was fine until Paul and John decided that two's company and three's a crowd, etc., and kicked Epstein out of the bed.

It's not proven, but many serious and well-informed people claim that Epstein committed suicide after a fight with Paul. Epstein supposedly gave Paul a very valuable gift, which Paul not only ignored but also hung up on Epstein, who, in despair, killed himself.

But John and Paul had many arguments, especially when Paul was still single and John was already tied down with the Japanese woman. The nippo, who is very wild and forward-thinking (4), didn't mind sharing John with Paul, but McCartney (that face never fooled Sérgio Cabral (5)) had jealousy issues. They fought and made up many times, even through music.

To "show the proof"(6) (I'm not sure why this phrase keeps coming up): Paul made up by composing Get Back (To Me) (7), and Lennon responded with a passionate interpretation of Oh Darling that everyone thought was "darling" (in the female sense) but was actually "darling" (in the male sense)(8). These are some of the great ambiguities of the English language.

But the Japanese woman really tied John Lennon down; no one knows exactly how. Or rather, everyone knows how.

The press started reporting that they were fighting a lot, and the explanations were always about "business and musical matters." Only a fool would believe that, since it's known that Apple was never in danger, none of the Beatles were at risk of starving, and the duo's musical production never suffered any drop in quality or sudden change in style.

After his last fight with John, Paul met Linda Eastman, who, through talks and things like that, convinced him to re-establish his heterosexuality (9). Probably out of revenge, Paul ended up marrying her to get back at John with a "for your information, I've already found someone else to replace you." (10)

The final result: John recording solo (Instant Karma is third on the American charts) while Paul is also making waves as a solo artist with Let It Be, first place on the American charts, and Paul's solo album has already been released.

Some clueless people might ask, "But how do Lennon & McCartney songs keep appearing?"

Elementary, my dear Jaguar (11): The duo has an exclusive contract with the music publisher Northern Songs until 1972, and everything one does will carry the other's name, at least nominally, as a partner. This practice is very common among songwriting duos where both contribute to the lyrics and music interchangeably.

You must admit that, at the very least, this is a respectable theory. I can't prove it because I've never been involved in this affair, which is absolutely not my specialty.

They’re the ones who are queer; let them figure it out.

(8) in Portuguese, every noun has a gender. darling can be translated to “querida” (feminine) or “querido” (masculine). 

(9) in the original, “restabelecer a mão única”. “mão única”, which literally translates to “one-way street”, makes a reference to paul’s sexuality, implying he was going (or into) on both “ways”, men and women.

(10) in the original, “pra teu governo já tenho outra em teu lugar”, another idiom. but works in english, anyway.

(11) in the original, “Elementar, meu caro Jaguar”, a playful reference to sherlock holmes’ line.

I had a chance to met up with a friend of mine and woah... Folks have issues for real.

For me, if situation is uncomfortable or not pleasing, I will walk away. And if circumstance don't allow me to, I will do everything in my power to leave; I will not stop at anything and I will throw an elderly person under the bus (both figuratively and also literally) to get out of that situation. Lying is not a bad thing if I want to avoid a bitch.

A little trip to memory lane with yer old papa Persues, so strap the fuck in, we're in this together. So I remember I once went out on a date with this one guy. And we were sitting on the grass, drinking vodka from plastic bottle, watching stars, ya know - faggotry and stuff. And he became uber creepy and started man handling me so I told him off. To no avail. Few moments later I picked up my phone because it was buzzing (an alarm I set just few seconds ago) and pretened that I'm talking with a friend; saying that I'm not busy and that I'll stop by her place in a moment because of this very serious situation that is coincidentally taking place right now. I excused myself and run the fuck away. Never talked to the guy ever again. I always tell my friends when I'm going out and I know I can count on them.

But turns out some people have inner blocks from using underhanded methods to escape weird if not dangerous situations. Don't do that. That's my good and hard learnt lesson kiddos and other bearded weirdos.

This publication company/business is one of the leading visual arts publications in South Africa. The magazine tackles the South African art scene and within this magazine, promotes it to the international/worldwide platform of art. Art Times shares knowledge of local art and various structures within the art world. The content of the magazine ranges from interviews, art write ups, current art events, business news around art, upcoming creatives and many more. The aim of the magazine is to give clear insight into the dynamics of the South African art scene to appeal both to local and an international audience.

2d) What I like about this publication.

What I like most about this magazine is the amount of quality content is shared within 122 pages. it deals with a lot of things within the art scene and every issue is different to the next. I also really enjoy the easy-readability of the writing of the articles. It is also very interesting and exciting that the magazine isn't afraid to promote artists; who are still in school, to a global audience. 

2e) How is this publication different to my other examples?

Art Times is generally formatted and printed slightly larger than an A5 page on very specific paper. The magazine is easy to read and unlike other magazines, accepts and puts submissions into final publications and not just on the website.

This books serves as a gateway to understanding Shakespeare in a more modern tone. This is a family book made up of Shakespeare's most famous plays, paraphrased for everyone to understand.

2d) What I like about this publication

I grew up reading Shakespeare and all of his screenplays. I am really intrigued and attracted to his formation of storylines and strong use of themes throughout each of his stories. With this specific publication I enjoy the tone it has been written in. it is easy to read and often calms my head. Within this publication is also aspects of illustration. These illustrations are filled with textures and colours which really interest me.

2e) How is this publication different to my other examples?

Compared to my other examples this publication is quite different. this publication comprises of many fictional stories flooded with hand drawn imagery. The Book also only(as far as I am concerned) exists as a physical book. It also has no index page and is supported by 2 hard covers on the outside.

2c) What do they do?

Cakeboy is a magazine that claims to be a ‘breeding ground for disruptive faggotry’. This bi-annual publication focuses on redefining and reclaiming the queer self on your own terms, without the glaze of the heterosexual over the magazine. Cakeboy emphasizes only the best in queer art, fashion and culture by exploring mediums such as; poetry, fiction, photography and art. The online publication comprises of many interviews on queer issues answered by queer people and interesting viewpoints more people should be focusing non.

2d) What I like about this publication

When I discovered this online publication earlier this year, I immediately found some sort if comfort within it (wow, it is scary that I find comfort in something digital and that millions have access it). The magazine is slowly changing ideas revolving around gender and make-up, which is being noticed by many brands such as I-D and Refinery29. I also really love that the magazine allows for people to find something to identify with, instead of being forced to look at the same reproduced masculine figure in mainstream culture.

2e) How is this publication different to my other examples?

As mentioned before it is published bi-annually at very specific times; fall and spring. This publication also does not allow for submissions with content, only submissions involving sponsorship are valid. The magazine also differs that all the content used revolves around the LGBTQ+ community only. A person who is uneducated about specific terms within the LGBTQ+ community would struggle navigating the intensely curated interviews and articles. However, this could also be seen as a somewhat educational platform about this specific community of people.

2c) What do they do?

Mental Floss is filled with facts about most things. It has recent news, old news, quizzes, random facts, word engines, etc. It serves to give the viewer a constant flow of interesting shareable information that is easily digested in a humorous way. 

2d) What I like about this publication

I really enjoy that this publication website has absolutely nothing to do with art. The publications is like an extended more in-depth version of Buzzfeed quizzes. I also enjoy the lack of seriousness of the content, such as (These are actual articles I have read); what makes a dogs  head tilt? What is the shelf life of a donated eye? How much paper would you need to print the internet? The facts I find on Mind Floss also serve as a starting point for possible research for an artwork.

2e) How is this publication different to my other examples?

This publication is different as it recently only exists as a digital publication. Mind floss is heavily fact based and extremely random with nature and structure of the online platform. This website is also targeting a wide range of people. The writing style is also very humorous and sounds like a conversation between the writer and the viewer. Has absolutely nothing to do with art.

2c) What do they do?

GUP is a magazine that revolves around the best contemporary photography. There is a big focus on conceptual photography, look books and compelling writing about photography.

2d) What I like about this publication

I started following this magazine on Instagram a few months ago when I started to take a liking to photography. I also after scrolling through my pinterest noticed I had saved quite a few covers from this magazine. I love the high quality of this magazine. I did read one or two articles by the time I started writing this (because procrastination is a thing) and they are quite lovely! I also love that every issue of GUP is completely different in subject matter.

2e) How is this publication different to my other examples?

When GUP used to print, they would produce 4 issues a year. The online publication also updates on the daily, constantly having a fresh flow of content. The tone in which the articles are written are also quite different. Some of the articles read as very academic or just more serious than the other publications I have referenced.
